Why one thermostat is not enough
With a single thermostat in the hallway, the whole home follows that one spot. Sunny rooms overheat, north-facing rooms stay cool, and you pay to heat guest rooms nobody is using.
Egyptian homes are often used unevenly: a large reception that is used on weekends, bedrooms used at night, a family room used every evening. Zoning matches the heating to that pattern.
How zoning works
With underfloor heating, each room’s pipe circuit already returns to the manifold. A small electric actuator on each circuit opens or closes it on the room thermostat’s command, so room-by-room control is natural.
With radiators, zones are usually made with motorised valves on groups of radiators, for example one per floor, and thermostatic heads on individual radiators fine-tune each room. Smart radiator heads can give full room-by-room control.
What “smart” adds
A smart thermostat connects to your Wi-Fi. You can set a weekly schedule per zone, turn the heating up on the way home, or switch everything off if you travel. Some learn how quickly each room warms and start in time to reach the temperature you set.
Good systems keep working on their schedule if the internet drops, and still have simple controls on the wall for anyone who does not use the app.
Adding zoning to an existing system
Underfloor systems are the easiest to upgrade: replace the room thermostats and add actuators at the manifold. Radiator systems can usually take smart radiator heads with no pipework changes, or motorised zone valves where pipes allow.
The boiler or heat pump then needs to be wired so it runs only when a zone calls for heat. That is checked at the survey, along with whether the system is balanced; zoning a badly balanced system just moves the cold room around.
Where to start
List the rooms and when each is used. That list is the zoning plan. From there we choose controls that suit the system you have and the way you live.
