Heat output decides how many and how big
Each room needs a certain heat output, worked out from its size, windows, outside walls and insulation. That output, not the floor area alone, sets how many radiators or sections the room needs. A quote that counts radiators by room without a heat-loss calculation is guessing, and the usual result is cold rooms.
Radiators also give less heat at lower water temperatures. If the system will run on a heat pump, radiators have to be sized larger to give the same warmth.
Type and finish
Aluminium section radiators heat up quickly and are light; steel panel radiators are a popular value choice; column, vertical and designer radiators cost more and are chosen for looks or tight wall space. Towel warmers for bathrooms are priced separately.
The difference between types matters less than getting the output right, but in living areas the look often decides it.
Valves and controls
Every radiator needs two valves. Thermostatic radiator valves, which let each room hold its own temperature, cost more than manual ones but save energy and make rooms more comfortable. Room thermostats, zone valves and smart controls add to the cost and to the savings.
Pipework, the home and the heat source
In a home being built or fully renovated, pipes are laid in the floor or walls before finishing, which is the simplest case. In a finished home, routes have to be planned around existing floors, which can mean surface pipework, boxing in, or careful channelling, and that adds labour.
The boiler or heat pump that feeds the radiators is often the largest single item. If a suitable one is already in place, the cost falls; if the system needs a new one, its type and size count for a lot. Electric radiators avoid pipework and a boiler altogether, but cost more to run.
Comparing radiator quotes
Ask each installer for the heat output per room, the radiator type and size, the valves, the pipe material and route, and what the price includes for the heat source, balancing and testing. Quotes that answer those questions can be compared; quotes that only list a number of radiators cannot.
