Heating a North Coast holiday home used at weekends

A home used at weekends needs heating that warms up by the time you arrive and costs nothing while you are away. That points to remote-controlled thermostats, emitters that respond quickly, and equipment chosen to cope with salty, damp sea air.

Warm when you arrive

Smart thermostats let you switch the heating on from Cairo a few hours before you set off. Radiators and electric mats respond fastest; water-based underfloor heating in a thick screed takes longer, so it suits homes that are used for longer stays or kept at a low background temperature.

Sea air and damp

Salt air corrodes outdoor units, flues and exposed metal faster. Choose equipment and coatings suited to coastal sites, position outdoor units out of direct sea spray where possible, and service them regularly. Gentle heating while the home is closed can also keep damp and musty smells down.

Heat source without a gas line

Many coastal compounds have no natural gas, so the realistic choices are a heat pump or an electric boiler, with solar for hot water. A heat pump can also heat a pool or jacuzzi, which many coastal homes have.

Leaving it for months

Before closing the home for the season, have the system checked: pressure, any leaks, and the water treatment that protects it from corrosion. Before the next winter, a service and a test run mean it works the first weekend you need it.
