When heaters are enough
If you live in a small apartment, are out most of the day and only need warmth in one room for an hour or two in the evening, portable heaters do the job. There is nothing to install, and they cost little to buy.
We would rather say that plainly: central heating is a long-term investment in comfort, and not every home needs it.
Comfort across the whole home
A portable heater warms the air near it. The rest of the room, the hallway, the bathroom and the cold stone floor stay cold. Families end up moving heaters from room to room.
Central heating keeps every room at the temperature you set, including bathrooms in the morning and bedrooms at night, quietly and without anything on the floor. With underfloor heating, the cold floor itself becomes the warmest surface.
Running costs
A portable electric heater turns each unit of electricity into one unit of heat. Several of them running every evening add up quickly, and Egypt’s tiered household tariffs mean heavy winter use can push the whole bill into a higher tier.
A gas boiler heats with gas, usually cheaper per unit of heat, and a heat pump delivers several units of heat for each unit of electricity. Add thermostats and zoning, and only the rooms in use are heated. Your bills depend on your home and habits, so we compare them at the survey.
Safety and air quality
Portable heaters bring trailing cables, hot surfaces near children and curtains, and overloaded sockets. Gas or kerosene room heaters add fumes and a carbon monoxide risk in closed rooms, and should never be used in bedrooms.
Central heating keeps the heat source in one place, installed and serviced properly, with no open flame in living spaces and nothing hot within reach.
At a glance
| Central heating | Electric heaters | |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | Every room, even warmth | Near the heater only |
| Running cost, whole home | Usually lower | High on tiered tariffs |
| Safety | Heat source in one place | Cables, hot surfaces, sockets |
| Best for | Homes heated daily, villas | One room, short use |
Is it worth it for your home?
Think about how many rooms you heat, how many hours a day, and how cold your floors feel. If the answers are “most of them”, “most evenings” and “very”, central heating is worth a survey.
