Aluminium or steel radiators? Choosing for your home

Aluminium radiators heat up and cool down quickly and are made in sections, so their size is easy to adjust. Steel panel radiators hold heat a little longer, look flatter and cleaner, and come in many standard sizes. Both work well when they are sized correctly for the room.

How they are made

An aluminium radiator is built from individual cast sections joined side by side. Need more heat in a room? Add sections. That makes it easy to fit an exact output to an exact wall space.

A steel panel radiator is made from pressed steel panels welded together, often with fins between them to add output. It comes in fixed heights and lengths, and in single, double or triple panel depths for more heat from the same wall area.

Heat-up speed and comfort

Aluminium conducts heat very well and holds little water, so it warms a room quickly once the heating comes on, and responds fast to the thermostat. That suits rooms used in the evening or now and then.

Steel panels hold a little more water and metal, so they take slightly longer to warm and keep giving off heat a little longer after the heating switches off. In everyday use, both are comfortable; the bigger difference is whether the radiator was sized properly.

Water quality matters with aluminium

Aluminium is sensitive to the chemistry of the water in the circuit. A system with aluminium radiators should be filled and treated with the right inhibitor, and not mixed carelessly with other metals. Done properly, aluminium radiators last for many years.

Steel panels are more forgiving, but they rust from the inside if air keeps getting into the system. In both cases, a sealed system at the right pressure and an annual check of the water are what keep radiators healthy.

Looks and space

Aluminium radiators have a ribbed, sectional look that many people know from older systems, though modern designs are slimmer. Steel panels have a flat or lightly lined face that sits quietly under a window.

Where the radiator is part of the design, there are designer radiators in vertical, horizontal and decorative forms, and towel warmers for bathrooms. Vertical radiators help where wall space under windows is limited.

Sizing comes first

Whatever the material, the radiator must give out the heat the room loses on a cold night, at the water temperature the system runs at. A heat pump runs cooler water than a boiler, so its radiators need to be larger for the same room.

That is calculated room by room from the room’s size, windows, outside walls and insulation. Choosing by wall length or habit is how homes end up with one cold room.

Which one is right for your home?

Both are good radiators. The choice usually comes down to the look you want, the wall space you have, and the system they will run on. Many homes mix them: panels in bedrooms, a designer radiator in the living room and towel warmers in the bathrooms.
